Gender Equality

Introduction

The EUMINAfab consortium is aware of a rather low participation of female researchers in its consortium. At the start of the project, the proportion of women among the people with major scientific and technological contributions was only 10%, this is significantly below the average of approx. 21% of women in engineering science as was derived by a European study (COM(2004) 115 final).

However, as a European Integrating Activity the EUMINAfab consortium is strongly committed also to integrate on a personnel level, i. e. ensuring a most balanced gender equality. This is why we have established a gender equality manager

  1. to stimulate general attraction of women to the high potential of micro and nano technological installations even at an early stage in scientific education,
  2. to allow a balanced work profile for experienced female researchers who in parallel to their scientific work are raising children, and
  3. to further qualify in particular part-time working women in the consortium who would otherwise not find the time to keep pace with evolving MNT.

EUMINAfab takes a series of subsequent steps and tasks, which are reported internally within the consortium and externally to the European Commission.

  • The EUMINAfab Gender Equality Survey is now online. If you are interested, please follow the survey tab above.

Tasks

The consortium identified five tasks for the gender equality manager, which are intended to support a constant awareness of gender related issues within the consortium and even beyond in further collaborations of the consortium partners. Intermediate and final results of the tasks will be reported to the project committees, thus influencing EUMINAfab’s project execution.

  • Evaluate the situation of female scientists within the consortium
  • Establishing a gender activity network
  • Develop a dedicated female researcher exchange activity
  • Promoting a network of female scientists in the area of multimaterial MNT
  • Annual evaluation of the gender actions

Survey

The following survey is one activity of the Gender Equality Awareness Activities which are carried out within EUMINAfab. The survey was developed to aim at evaluating the situation of female scientists in the European Micro Nano Technology (MNT) community. EUMINAfab would like to get an overview about the situation of female scientists compared to male scientists in European MNT research. An important topic is the compatibility of work and family life, the battle of sexes within the work environment and other challenges of women and men.
This questionnaire is intended for both men and women. We would appreciate to have also an appropriate number of responses from male scientists.

A further Gender Equality Awareness Activity is the establishment of a gender activity network. If you are interested in joining this new network of female scientists, please send a mail ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ).

New EU Prize for Women Innovators

6 December 2011

The European Commission has announced a new prize to give public recognition to the very best women innovators who have brought their outstanding achievements to market. The aim of this new prize is to raise public awareness of the needs for more innovation and especially more women entrepreneurs in research and industry. The EU Prize for Women Innovators will be awarded to three women entrepreneurs, who were at some point during their careers beneficiaries of funding for projects under the RTD Framework Programme (FP) or the Competitive and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP).

The winners were selected by an independent panel of judges from business and academia. The award ceremony took place on 5 December 2011 at the Innovation Convention organised by the European Commission in Brussels.

The winners are:

  1. Gitte Neubauer, Co-founder CELLZOME, Vice-President Research Operations
  2. Fabienne Hermitte, Co-founder IPSOGEN, Senior Director Research and Development - Regulatory Affairs
  3. Ilaria Rosso, Co-founder ELECTRO POWER SYSTEMS, Vice-President of IP Policy and Public Funding Programmes

Toolkit and Training - Training Session on how to integrate Gender Aspects into Research

Scope

Interested in what gender-sensitive research practically means?
These one-day training sessions are intended for anybody interested in rendering research gender-sensitive: researchers, project managers, National Contact Points, expert evaluators, etc. The sessions will provide practical guidance on how the gender dimension can be integrated in research, using clear examples of how gender is relevant to existing FP7 projects. The toolkit and training packages give the research community practical tools to integrate gender aspects into FP7 research, including equal opportunities for women and men AND the gender dimension of research, thereby contributing to excellence in research.

Details

The training sessions will take place at different locations across Europe. The training sessions are usually held in English.

Approach: interactive and experience-based, short presentations as reminder of theory, practical exercises in small groups, case studies.

Equality in the Workplace: Zero Tolerance on Gender-Based Discrimination and Harassment in Europe

6st March 2012 in Brussels, Belgium

Scope

Equality between women and men is one of the fundamental principles of EU law, and furthermore, harassment is mentioned in the national legislation of seventeen European countries.

Nevertheless, gender-based discrimination is still prominent in many workplaces with harassment manifesting itself in many forms. Concern about the effects of workplace discrimination and harassment on the health and safety of workers has been growing over the last decade.

Public Policy Exchange continues its equality platform with a special international symposium on tackling gender-based discrimination and harassment in the workplace. Participants will have the opportunity to exchange best practices with leading practitioners, international organisations and major stakeholders across Europe.

8th European Feminist Research Conference

17th - 20th May 2012 in Budapest, Hungary

Scope

Women and men in Europe in the first decades of the 21st century are confronted with acute social, political, cultural, economic and environmental concerns. In striving to address these concerns on regional, national and international levels, feminist scholars are re-assessing their theoretical and political toolbox. The 'politics of location', coined by Adrienne Rich in 1976, continues to play a crucial role in these debates. Women's and gender studies cannot do without reflecting on the politics of their locations, but how to use this tool now that locations are constantly shifting? When the locations we inhabit are perceived to be multiple, paradoxical and (in)comparable? The 8th European Feminist Research Conference invites scholars, students, activists and policy makers to re-visit their politics of location in the light of current crises in Europe and beyond, and to reflect upon the ways in which feminist scholarly tools can be used for understanding and for changing the world.

Details

Reflecting the diversity of women's and gender studies European Feminist Research Conferences represent cutting-edge scholarship. The 8th European Feminist Research Conference is organized by the Central European University, Department of Gender Studies and AtGender, the European Association for Gender Research, Education and Documentation. The European Feminist Research Conferences usually have more than 500 participants from both inside and outside Europe. The Conferences have a track record of presenting innovative feminist scholarly work with critical perspectives on contemporary Europe and its histories.

Confirmed Keynote Speakers

  • HANA HAVELKOVA, Faculty of Humanities, Charles University, Czech Republic
  • CLARE HEMMINGS, Gender Institute, The London School of Economics and Political Science
  • ANDREA PETŐ, Central European University, Budapest, Hungary
  • FATIMA SADIQI, International Institute for Languages and Cultures, Fez, Morocco

Call for Papers

The 8th European Feminist Research Conference welcomes papers that keep in focus the connections among a number of relevant axes that frame current researches in the field. We have in mind connections between disciplines and interdisciplinarity; the past, the present and the future; gender and intersectionality; activism and power; local and global; margin and center. The strands listed below indicate the main lines of inquiry around which the Conference will be structured.

Registration

The registration for the 8th European Feminist Research Conference will be open from September 30, 2011.
