Joint Research Activities

The general objective of the joint research activities (JRA) is to enable a strong operative interaction between European micro and nano infrastructures and R&D institutions. At the start of user operation the basics were in place to offer users access to our facilities, however much work needs to be done to make our infrastructure sustainable. The structural and technological feats required for this are the focus of the JRA.

JRA1 - Collaborative engineering system for user requests

Until today there has been no holistic approach for such an integrated organisational system. Therefore, JRA1 aims at developing non-technology oriented solutions and approaches for collaboration on technological level. The aim is to pave the way for a higher level of integration within EUMINAfab’s consortium.  The name given to this tool is MinaBase. The MinaBase,  is currently under construction and will enable a user-friendly operability and robustness of EUMINAfab’s offer of user access services which is intended to last beyond the project duration.

JRA2 - Design for manufacture knowledge

The aim of this work package is to provide an interface between a modularised "solution neutral" description of TNA requests (application/user groups oriented) and prototyping or batch manufacturing solutions offered within EUMINAfab. To facilitate the mapping of application specific requirements (functional aspects) and manufacturing capabilities (machine and laboratory performance) are considered independently from particular applications and installations.

JRA3 - Technologies and process chains

The aim of this work package is to support integration activities of EUMINAfab installations in both horizontal and vertical dimensions.

a) Horizontal integration: For the long term sustainability of EUMINAfab a traceable calibration system is essential.  A series of reproducibility and repeatability trials are being designed and carried out with particular consideration to the broad spread of capabilities within the technology portfolio of EUMINAfab.

b) Vertical Integration: the focus is the development and characterisation/comparison of process chains in order to satisfy application specific requirements of the EUMINAfab user community. This work is application-driven and results in establishing and continuously improving the EUMINAfab reference process chains leading to a “vertical” integration of partners’ installations.
